  • The same year, AT & T and another group of licensees responded by forming UNIX International ( UI ).
  • OSF had previously merged with UNIX International in 1994, meaning that the new entity effectively represented all elements of the Unix community of the time.
  • During this time, it joined Unix International, and participated in the development of the first multiprocessor SVR4, along with Unisys, Intel and Sequent Computer Systems.
  • In 1994, after AT & T had sold UNIX System V to Novell and the rival Unix International consortium had disbanded, the Open Software Foundation ceased funding of research and development of OSF / 1.
  • By 1990 the group had expanded to 21 members : in addition to the original five, Philips and Nokia from Europe; AT & T Corporation, Hitachi, and NEC from Japan; plus the Open Software Foundation and Unix International.
  • AT & T and Sun, as UNIX International, acted independently of X / Open and drew ire from other vendors, which started the Open Software Foundation to work on their own unified Unix, OSF / 1, ushering in a new phase of the Unix wars.
  • AT & T founded the UNIX International ( UI ) project management organization later that year as a counter-response to the OSF . UI was led by Peter Cunningham as its President formerly of ICL . UI had many of the same characteristics of OSF with the exception of a software development staff.
